More Than Words - Building Reading Communities

Words Count Conference 2017 A conference to raise awareness of the importance of reading and how a collaborative community approach can help transform lives

Outline

The 2017 Words Count Conference is a professional learning experience featuring many influential keynote and seminar contributors and best practice exhibitors.
By bringing together national experts, who will disseminate the latest research, guidance and advice in relation to literacy, you will explore how building reading communities can significantly impact on life chances. ‘Reading is a skill for life – not just the classroom’.

The event will raise awareness of the importance of reading and how a collaborative community approach can help support young people to reach their potential by becoming confident and enthusiastic readers and develop the essential skills they need to flourish and succeed.

Description

Every year in England, thousands of children and young people leave school without the confidence and fluency in reading that they need. New assessment arrangements introduced in summer 2016 show only 66% of 11-year-olds are reading at the expected level. The impact on their learning, life chances and engagement with reading is significant. We need to ensure that every child can read well. Getting children reading is a job for all of us.

Children’s early language and reading are influenced by family, peers and culture as much as by schools and public services. Under the general theme ‘Building Reading Communities’, this conference will create a forum for the presentation and discussion of findings from current research into literacy development and explore how mobilising the resources in all parts of society can make a real difference.

The themes for the conference include the following:
  • Whole community approaches to reading
  • The impact of reading on life chances
  • Building a reading legacy for the future
  • Developing thinking through picture books
  • Reading for pleasure and parental engagement
  • Sensory story telling
  • Teenagers and Reading
  • Creating Readers for Life
  • The Power of Poetry
